Tensions flared at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on Thursday as Palestinian Football Federation President Jibril Rajoub refused to stand alongside Israel FA Vice-President Basim Sheikh Suliman, according to multiple reports. The incident occurred after FIFA President Gianni Infantino attempted to mediate a show of unity between the two officials.
Infantino called both Rajoub and Suliman to the stand, urging them to stand together, but Rajoub declined. According to Palestinian FA Vice-President Susan Shalabi, Rajoub stated, “shake the hand of someone the Israelis have brought to whitewash their fascism and genocide. We are suffering.”

Israel has denied committing genocide in Gaza. Shalabi criticized Infantino’s attempt to facilitate a handshake, arguing it undermined Rajoub’s speech, which pleaded for Israeli clubs to refrain from basing teams in West Bank settlements. She stated that the attempt to force a handshake “negates the whole purpose of the speech that the general (Rajoub) was giving.”
Shalabi further explained that Rajoub had spent considerable time emphasizing the importance of rules and preventing precedents that could violate the rights of member associations and that the call for a handshake felt like an attempt to “wrap this under the carpet.” She described the situation as “absurd.”
Infantino Affirms Iran’s World Cup Participation
Amidst the conflict between Iran and the United States, FIFA President Gianni Infantino affirmed that Iran will participate in the upcoming World Cup and play its matches in the United States. “And the reason for that is very simple, dear friends, is because we have to unite. We have to bring people together. We see my responsibility. It is our responsibility,” Infantino said during his address at the FIFA Congress. “Football unites the world. FIFA unites the world. You unite the world. We unite the world.”

This affirmation comes after representatives from the Iranian soccer federation were reportedly denied entry into Canada this week. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated her “understanding” was that the Iranian officials were turned away at Toronto’s airport, following a report from Tasnim, an Iranian news agency. The report indicated that Iranian soccer federation president Mehdi Taj and two other officials were denied entry.
The issue of Iran’s participation in the World Cup was not directly addressed at the Asian soccer federation’s congress earlier in the week. During the roll call at the FIFA Congress, Iran was listed as absent.
Protests Outside FIFA Congress
Outside the Vancouver Convention Center, a small group of protestors demonstrated, holding Iranian flags. This occurred as the FIFA Congress was underway, addressing both the Iranian participation issue and the conflict between the Palestinian and Israeli football federations.
