Fifth Third Invests in Payload to Expand Embedded Payments Platform
Payload has secured a strategic investment led by Fifth Third to expand its embedded payments platform, according to a Wednesday, August 19 press release. The funding round aims to scale the company’s engineering and go-to-market teams while accelerating new payment rail integrations across software ecosystems and industry verticals.
Founded in late 2019, Payload processed its first payment in January 2020 and has grown rapidly, processing nearly $500 million in May alone, per the company’s announcement. According to American Banker, the firm currently processes transactions at a rate of about $6 billion per year. Initially, the network gained prominence as a top handler of earnest money deposits within the Canadian and United States residential real estate sectors.
Expansion Beyond Residential Real Estate
While the real estate industry adopted the technology during the pandemic when in-person transactions faced severe hurdles, Payload has since been embraced by legal payments, professional services, property management, homebuilding, and franchises. According to American Banker, CEO and Co-Founder Ryan Rybolt noted that businesses needing to move money between multiple parties—such as law firms handling client funds or property managers—share similar payment complexities.
The real estate industry found us during the pandemic, when there were issues with doing real estate transactions in person, whether it be a home seller, title company, brokerage, etc.,
Rybolt said, as reported by American Banker. He further mentioned that these organizations required a swift mechanism for transferring funds mutually by integrating payment capabilities straight into their internal systems.
Payload’s Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder Ian Halpern stated in the press release that the platform was engineered to let developers move from a first API call to processing live payments in hours, providing enterprise-ready security, real-time event handling, and flexible checkout experiences.
Fifth Third’s Strategic Role and Commercial Payments Growth

Scaling Embedded Finance Through Newline
Fifth Third is not acquiring Payload, but the bank’s investment aligns with the expansion of its own embedded finance unit, Newline, according to American Banker coverage. Bridgit Chayt, executive vice president and head of commercial payments and treasury management at Fifth Third, said in the press release that the bank sees enormous opportunity as businesses demand smarter, faster, and more seamlessly integrated ways to move money.
We have sought to make sure that we are creating value by being in the tech stack of these companies,
Chayt told American Banker in an earlier interview regarding Newline. And you find your ego in a different place there because it’s not about having the Fifth Third shield all over it to the end customer. And in fact they rarely even know you’re involved, but you’re able to participate in that part of the commerce.
Fifth Third’s commercial payments business generated more than $1 billion in fee revenue, with Newline serving as its fastest-growing segment. According to American Banker, Newline expects to process more than $25 trillion in payment volume in 2026, a significant increase from the $9 trillion processed in 2016. Major clients of Fifth Third’s commercial division include Stripe, Trustly, and payroll firm ADP.
Market Context and Industry Demand
Data from PYMNTS Intelligence reports emphasize that embedded finance acts as a competitive differentiator, enabling financial technology firms and businesses to weave payment functions directly into digital ecosystems. This integration helps organizations maintain full control of the customer journey, build customer loyalty, and increase lifetime value. Financing Your Way noted that Fifth Third’s backing of Payload signals a broader market shift toward software-integrated merchant services designed to eliminate payment friction and accelerate cash flow.
