According to the latest research conducted by scientists at the University of Georgia, Omega-3 (ω-3) and Omega-6 (ω-6) fatty acids have been shown to help prevent various cancers. These essential fatty acids also contribute to lowering cholesterol, maintaining brain health, and improving psychological well-being. The related paper was recently published in the International Cancer Journal.
Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are crucial for human health. They are found in fish rich in fatty acids, nuts, and rapeseed oil. Previous research has shown that omega-3 supplementation can reduce the risk of high cholesterol and heart disease.
In a recent 10-year follow-up study involving data from 250,000 people, researchers found a correlation between higher levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in the body and a lower risk of developing cancer. Nearly 30,000 participants developed some form of cancer during this period.
Specifically, participants with relatively high levels of omega-3 fatty acids had a lower incidence of colon, stomach, and lung cancer, in addition to a relatively low overall incidence of digestive cancer. Those with relatively high levels of omega-6 fatty acids showed a reduced risk of developing 14 types of cancer, including brain cancer, malignant melanoma, and bladder cancer.
It’s important to note that another study suggests a slightly higher risk of prostate cancer associated with high levels of omega-3s.
