Figo’s Return to Barcelona Met with Respect Despite Past Rivalry
Barcelona President Joan Laporta stated that former player Luís Figo will be welcomed with respect at the Champions League quarter-final match between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the Lluís companys Olympic Stadium. Figo, now a member of the UEFA Board, previously played for Barcelona and was a fan favorite before his controversial transfer to Real Madrid in 2000.
“Figo is a member of the UEFA Board and is absolutely respectable. He has been a Barça player, we remember the afternoons and nights of glory he gave us. Then he made a decision and life continues. He will be received with all the respect that corresponds,” Laporta said before a meeting with the PSG directive.
Figo will watch the match from the Olympic Stadium’s VIP box. His return has generated significant anticipation given the ancient rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid, intensified by his high-profile move over two decades ago. The transfer, occurring in July 2000, was valued at approximately €56.2 million, a world-record fee at the time, and fueled intense animosity between the clubs and thier supporters. The Guardian reported extensively on the transfer at the time, detailing the political and sporting ramifications.
Champions league Clash Anticipated
Laporta described the upcoming match against the current Champions League titleholders as a highly anticipated event. “Everyone is waiting for him [the match], since it is one of the best games that can be seen in the Champions League,” he stated. He also reflected on a missed opportunity from the previous season, noting that a Barcelona-PSG match ”would have been the best game of last season, because we did not reach the Champions League final despite making a great season.”
The current Champions League season sees Barcelona aiming to improve upon their performance in the 2023-2024 La Liga season, where they secured the title. La Liga’s official website confirms Barcelona’s 2023-2024 title win.
Luis Enrique’s Return Also Welcomed
Laporta also expressed his pleasure at the return of Luis Enrique, now the coach of PSG, to the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium. “It is a game of maximum rivalry. We have a coach who has full confidence in the team. The two teams have casualties, something that is a pity, but ther are no excuses,” Laporta added. Enrique previously managed Barcelona from 2014 to 2017,leading the team to a treble-winning season in 2015. FC Barcelona’s official website details luis Enrique’s successful tenure.
