Diaspora Voices Concerns Over Regional Connectivity
Many Fijians residing throughout the Pacific region are advocating for more affordable airfares and increased regional flight options from Fiji Airways, the nation’s flag carrier. These concerns were highlighted by Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, Fiji’s high Commissioner to New Zealand and Special Envoy to the Pacific, who reported feedback from the fijian diaspora.
Specifically, Ratu Inoke noted that approximately 3,000 Fijians living in the Cook Islands have expressed the need for improved travel accessibility. While recent easing of travel restrictions, such as the removal of transit visa requirements through New Zealand, has been welcomed, further improvements are desired to facilitate smoother travel throughout the Pacific.
Balancing profitability wiht Regional Access
Ratu Inoke Kubuabola acknowledged the financial realities facing Fiji Airways, recognizing the airline’s need to operate profitably. Though, he suggested that strategic partnerships could be a key solution to enhancing the viability of regional routes. This approach could allow Fiji Airways to expand its network without compromising its financial stability.
As of September 11, 2024, fiji Airways has not yet issued a public comment regarding these concerns.
