Filipina Maid Inherits $3 Million and Luxury Apartment from Singapore Employer

A 47-year-old domestic worker from the Philippines identified as Christine has inherited a luxury apartment in Singapore alongside nearly £3 million, equivalent to about Rp 41,5 miliar, from her late employer, according to reports from Tempo and regional outlets. The substantial bequest was left by Dr. Quek Kai Miew, who died last year at the age of 66. According to reporting from Tempo, the inheritance was granted as a reward for the care Christine provided to both the doctor and her elderly mother.

A Lasting Bond of Care and Companionship

Christine worked closely with Dr. Quek Kai Miew and took on the responsibility of caring for the physician’s mother until her death. According to Tempo, the relationship between employer and employee went far beyond standard domestic duties. Christine stated that she lived with Dr. Quek longer than she had lived with her own mother, noting that the two were inseparable. Following the doctor’s death, Christine sought comfort by staying with the physician’s nephew. Describing herself to The Straits Times as the luckiest domestic worker in Singapore, she emphasized that the emotional loss far outweighed the financial gain.

Security Concerns Prompt Residency Application

Despite the sudden acquisition of a luxury apartment and millions in funds, Christine’s daily routine and lifestyle have remained unchanged. According to Tempo, she continues to live as she always has, declining to adopt the lifestyle of a wealthy individual, and notes that her fellow Filipino domestic workers treat her no differently. However, the newfound wealth has introduced severe personal security risks. As reported by Tempo and other regional outlets, Christine has deliberately withheld her full identity out of fear that criminals in the Philippines might target her family for ransom or attempt to kidnap her upon her return. To mitigate these safety hazards, she has formally applied for permanent residency in Singapore.
