Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, but players will need to purchase a separate subscription to access the game on the new platform, even if they already subscribe on other systems.
The announcement was made during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2026, where director and producer Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) and Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu revealed the plans for bringing the MMORPG to Nintendo’s next-generation hybrid console. Yoshida explained that the decision came after extensive discussions with Nintendo, resulting in a subscription model unique to the Switch 2 version.
While players on other platforms only need the base game and a single monthly subscription to play Final Fantasy XIV, the Switch 2 version requires an additional, separate subscription fee. This means existing players who wish to play on Switch 2 must buy both the game for the new platform and a new subscription specifically for it.
However, Square Enix has secured concessions to ease the transition. A Nintendo Switch Online membership will not be required to play Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 during either the early access period or official service. Players with active subscriptions on other platforms will receive a 50 percent discount on their Switch 2 subscription.
The game will first be available through a one-month early access period starting in August 2026, allowing players to try it for free before the official service begins. This early access phase is intended to ensure server stability ahead of the full launch.
Final Fantasy XIV remains one of the most successful MMORPGs in the industry, with a large and active player base across PC, PlayStation and other platforms. Its arrival on Switch 2 marks a significant expansion of the game’s accessibility, though the separate subscription requirement has drawn attention from fans concerned about added costs.
Square Enix has not announced an exact release date beyond the August 2026 window, and no further details about pricing or regional availability have been provided at this time. The company has stated that additional updates will be shared as development progresses.
