France is currently facing a significant challenge: a shortage of dentists, particularly in rural areas. This shortage impacts access to dental care and prompts both patients and professionals to seek innovative solutions.
The Reality of the Dentist Shortage
In Dordogne, the shortage is palpable. Christophe Callen contacted “une bonne quinzaine de dentistes” in terrasson, Sarlat, Brive, and Périgueux, all without success. He noted that “Les délais d’attente étaient de deux ou trois mois minimum.” This prompted him to take a humorous approach, posting on Facebook: “Avis aux dentistes du Périgord noir : cours de danse rock en échange d’une bouche d’enfer !”
Callen,a resident of Saint-Rabier in Dordogne, fractured a molar while eating a simple gummy candy a couple of weeks prior. As then, he has been unable to eat normally, his tooth is loose, and he fears an infection.
His Facebook post garnered attention, even from afar. “À la suite de cette publication, j’ai été contacté par deux dentistes mais ils étaient dans le Tarn et à Clermont-Ferrand.” The buzz even reached South America, where a French-speaking dentist offered to treat him for free if he made the trip!
Fortunately, Callen found an appointment closer to home, on Monday, March 10, just 28 kilometers away in Saint-Pierre-de-Chignac, thanks to a friend’s recommendation.
Callen, who works as a computer and pedagogy trainer during the day and a rock teacher on Friday evenings, had previously offered dance lessons in 2024 to find a general practitioner upon arriving in the department. Although that effort was initially unsuccessful, he eventually found a doctor 40 kilometers from his home.
Extent of the shortage
The situation in Dordogne reflects a broader trend. The department has approximately 200 dentists, but according to the Order of Dental surgeons of Dordogne, about fifty more are needed. Dr. Lionel Rimpault, its president, laments, “Nos listes d’attente s’allongent, nous sommes débordés.”
The uneven distribution of healthcare professionals exacerbates the problem. The secretary of the maison dentaire, the headquarters of the Order, and some dental assistants sometimes direct urgent patients to emergency clinics in Bordeaux and Limoges.
Dr.Rimpault believes solutions must come from the Ministry of Health. “Les leviers pour faire évoluer la démographie professionnelle sont nombreux : former plus d’étudiants, décharger le plus possible les professionnels des charges administratives qui augmentent de façon exponentielle, favoriser l’insertion sociale des jeunes qui arrivent dans le département…”
While every dentist is supposed to handle emergencies for their patients, this is only possible if the patient is already under their care.
It’s worth noting that in Dordogne, a permanent on-call service is provided every Sunday by two dentists, reachable at 05 53 08 55 08.
National Outlook and Solutions
The dentist shortage isn’t limited to Dordogne. Many areas of France are experiencing similar difficulties. There are 62 dentists for every 100,000 inhabitants in France – lower than the EU average (74).
To address this, new regulations are set to take affect from January 1,2025. These regulations aim to redistribute dentists by restricting approvals for dentists to work in areas deemed to have a ”very high” or “high” number of dentists. Conversely, approvals will be granted to those setting up practices in underserved areas.
However, some experts believe the dentist shortage in France “is unlikely to improve for a decade.”
Potential Solutions
Dr. Rimpault suggests several levers to improve the professional demographic:
- Training more students
- Reducing administrative burdens on professionals
- Promoting social integration for young professionals entering the department
These measures, combined with the new regulations, represent efforts to alleviate the dentist shortage and ensure access to dental care for all residents of France.
