Cash Crunch: ATM Network Struggles to Expand in Rural Belgium

Batopin, Belgium’s‍ independent ATM network, is facing challenges in⁢ its mission to bring cash access to every corner of the country.

Launched ‍in 2020 by ‍four major Belgian banks – KBC, ING, BNP‌ Paribas Fortis, and Belfius – Batopin aims to provide a convenient way for all Belgians to withdraw ⁤cash, nonetheless of thier bank affiliation. ⁤

“Currently, there are already 500 cash points live across Belgium,” ‌says spokesperson Julie Kerremans. “We offer three types of cash points: cash shops, cash walls, and cash ‌kiosks.”

However, ⁢finding suitable locations for these cash ⁢points has proven to be a‌ hurdle. “The search for locations in certain areas is‌ proving difficult because properties must meet a number of technical and security requirements,” Kerremans explains.

Over the past few years, Batopin has‌ evaluated 11,000 properties, but many have not been suitable. The company is particularly struggling to find locations in Boom, Grimbergen, Kampenhout, Londerzeel, Ronse, Waasmunster, and Zedelgem.Despite ‍these challenges,Batopin remains committed to ⁢its goal of reaching 970 cash points by the end of 2025. “We are continuing our search and are doing everything we can ‍to ensure the installations proceed smoothly,” says Kerremans.
