Fine & Biss at Evanston Candidate Forum – Illinois 2026 Election

Campaign Finance Scrutiny Intensifies in Illinois 9th Congressional District Race

Evanston, Illinois – , a candidate forum for the 9th Congressional District Democratic primary quickly turned contentious, with accusations flying over campaign finance practices. State Sen. Laura Fine faced sharp criticism from fellow candidates, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, regarding the sources of her campaign donations.

The forum, hosted by the Central Street Neighbors Association at Northminster Presbyterian Church, saw Biss directly challenge Fine about contributions from individuals who have also donated to Republican politicians, including former President Donald Trump. According to Biss, Fine has received “nearly $60,000 from 42 different donors who gave money to Trump.”

Biss’s criticism extended to Fine’s relationship with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), stating, “It should be very troubling that the overwhelming majority of Laura Fine’s donations come from AIPAC supporters.” He further asserted that Fine “supports a blank check of military aid for Israel.”

Candidates Kat Abughazaleh and Bushra Amiwala also voiced concerns about the influence of AIPAC money in the race, with Abughazaleh reportedly applauding Biss’s statements on the matter. The issue of AIPAC’s involvement in the primaries has gained broader attention, as reported by Politico, which noted the more than $1 million in outside spending could mirror outcomes seen in other recent primaries.

Fine responded to the attacks, characterizing them as a coordinated effort to make her a “punching bag.” She directly countered Biss, accusing him of hypocrisy regarding his own interactions with AIPAC. “He’ll tell one group one thing, and another group another thing,” Fine said, claiming Biss had met with AIPAC multiple times early in the campaign and only shifted his rhetoric after the group chose not to endorse him.

According to Fine, Biss had initially been open to AIPAC’s support, stating, “I did not ever ask for AIPAC’s support. Their support was available to me only if I had been willing to change my positions.”

The debate also included a lightning round where candidates responded with “YES” or “NO” to questions. Fine was the only candidate to respond affirmatively when asked if she had received contributions from donors who had also supported Republicans. Her campaign subsequently accused Biss of misrepresenting facts during the forum regarding Republican donor support.

A similar forum held on , by the Pink Poster Club on Howard Street, was described as “fiery” and featured similar attacks on campaign finance and outside spending. State Sen. Mike Simmons joined Biss in rebuking Fine for accepting contributions from Republican donors.

The escalating tensions over campaign finance highlight a key battleground in the crowded Democratic primary for the 9th Congressional District. The candidates’ differing stances on accepting donations from various sources, and the role of groups like AIPAC, are shaping the narrative as voters prepare to head to the polls.
