Mick Magher and Bernie Webb are counting their blessings after a notable crash during the Finke Desert Race. The pair escaped with minor injuries after their trophy truck became airborne at approximately 160 kilometers per hour, about 10 kilometers north of the Finke/Aputula community.
magher recounted that the incident occurred early Monday morning.After experiencing communication issues on the race’s first day, they were settling in for a smooth ride back to alice Springs when the truck launched off a crest.
“We just started to settle in and took off over the crest,” Magher said. “the front caught a dip on the way down, and then it was just on for the ride.” He described parts flying everywhere during the wild crash.
“We landed 60 meters from were we took off.”
Magher estimated the G-force inside the cockpit reached approximately 17 during the Finke Desert Race crash. He credited their safety gear for preventing serious injury. “The safety gear certainly did its job,” Magher stated. “It’s not something I recommend everybody try,that’s for sure.”
Despite the violence of the Finke Desert Race incident, Magher and Webb sustained only bruising.”There’s a few harness strap bruises,” Magher explained, “but other than that, we’re both surprisingly well.”
“It happened awfully quick.”
Following the Finke desert Race crash, Magher and Webb promptly focused on exiting the vehicle and clearing the track. “We both turned around, looked at each other, said, ‘You’re alright?'” he recalled.Spectators assisted in moving the wrecked truck.
Travis Robinson secured the car section victory, while Corey Hammond triumphed in the motorbike category. Madi Healey earned the Queen of the Desert title.

Looking ahead,Magher affirmed his commitment to participating in next year’s race,which marks the 50th anniversary of the Finke Desert Race.
