Divers Alert Network (DAN), a global scuba safety organization, has mobilized a team of specialized Finnish cave divers to the Maldives to lead a high-risk recovery mission for four Italian nationals. The team arrived in the Maldives on May 17, 2026, to assist local authorities in retrieving remains from a perilous underwater cave system in the Vaavu Atoll.

The deployment comes as part of a multinational effort to resolve a diving tragedy that has already resulted in multiple fatalities, including a senior member of the Maldivian military. The Finnish divers were recommended for the mission by Italy due to their extensive experience in deep-sea and cave diving operations globally.

International Mobilization and Logistics

Three Finnish diving experts from DAN touched down in the Maldives on May 17, 2026. According to Maldives chief government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef, the team was dispatched to coordinate with the local coast guard to implement a new strategy for the recovery operation.

The scale of the operation is expanding to include further international expertise. A fourth diving expert was scheduled to join the Finnish team on May 17, 2026, alongside the arrival of specialized equipment sourced from the United Kingdom and Australia.

The involvement of DAN, a specialized safety group, underscores the technical complexity of the mission. Mohamed Hussain Shareef told CNN that the Finnish experts were recommended by Italy and have completed deep dives and cave dives around the world.

Operational Risks and Fatalities

The recovery effort has been marked by extreme danger, claiming the life of a Maldivian military diver during a previous attempt. Sgt. Mohamed Mahudhee, 43, died on May 16, 2026, while conducting a second recovery mission into the cave.

The death of the senior officer has highlighted the severe risks associated with the site’s geography. Shareef noted the significance of the loss, stating:

He was one of the most senior divers, which shows just how challenging this dive is

The recovery site is a cave that extends 200 meters in length and reaches a maximum depth of 70 meters below the surface, a depth comparable to the height of a 20-story building.

The Vaavu Atoll Accident

The current recovery operation follows a diving expedition on May 14, 2026, involving a group of Italian nationals aboard the vessel Duke of York. According to Italy’s foreign ministry, the group included approximately 20 Italian citizens exploring the Vaavu Atoll.

Five Italian divers killed in cave dive in the Maldives

Five Italian divers died during the expedition. The body of diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti was located at the mouth of the cave, which led authorities to conclude that the remaining four divers are still trapped inside the system.

The four individuals remaining in the cave have been identified as:

  • Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of ecology at the University of Genoa
  • Giorgia Sommacal, daughter of Monica Montefalcone
  • Federico Gualtieri, a marine biologist
  • Muriel Oddenino, a researcher

The transition from local military recovery attempts to the deployment of the DAN-mobilized Finnish team reflects the specialized nature of cave diving, where standard military or commercial diving protocols may be insufficient for the specific hazards of confined, deep-water environments.
