Fiorentina News: Vanoli on Rugani, Gudmundsson & Conference League

Fiorentina News: Vanoli on Rugani, Gudmundsson & Conference League

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Florence, Italy – February 25, 2026 – Fiorentina coach Paolo Vanoli provided an update on the fitness of key players ahead of Thursday’s Conference League playoff return leg against Jagiellonia. The team is also preparing for a Serie A match against Udinese, and Vanoli outlined plans to get some players match-ready through a friendly with the Primavera squad.

The most encouraging news centers around Albert Gudmundsson. Vanoli confirmed that the forward came to the bench during the recent match against Pisa and completed an aerobic training session on Tuesday. “I hope to be able to use him during the match and give him some playing time,” Vanoli stated in a press conference. This suggests Gudmundsson is progressing well from a recent injury and could feature against Jagiellonia, providing a boost to Fiorentina’s attacking options.

Also on Vanoli’s mind is Daniele Rugani’s fitness. The coach revealed a specific plan to increase Rugani’s playing time. “We have organized a friendly match with the Primavera to get him in shape for Udine,” Vanoli explained. This indicates Rugani has been lacking consistent minutes and the coaching staff is proactively working to build his match fitness ahead of the Serie A fixture.

Vanoli emphasized the importance of not underestimating Jagiellonia. “Surely the most important aspect is to advance to the next round, then the mentality of how to approach these matches,” he said. He referenced a previous playoff experience against Polissya, stressing the need for focus and avoiding complacency. “I want this match not to be underestimated and at the same time we must have continuity: winning helps to win.”

Regarding the team’s overall availability, Vanoli stated that all players, excluding those not on the UEFA squad list, will be available for selection against Jagiellonia. This suggests a largely full squad for the crucial Conference League encounter.

The coach also touched upon the development of young defender Comuzzo. “He needs to improve in building play, because today a defender must be technically good,” Vanoli noted. He acknowledged areas for improvement, specifically mentioning Comuzzo’s occasional lapses in marking, but framed them as minor issues the player is actively working on.

Looking beyond the Jagiellonia match, Vanoli highlighted the importance of Serie A. He acknowledged Jagiellonia’s quality, stating, “They play well. We often underestimate other leagues.” This suggests a respect for the opposition and a recognition that European competition requires a focused approach.

Fiorentina’s recent form has been positive, and Vanoli reiterated that winning breeds confidence. The team will be looking to carry that momentum into both the Conference League and Serie A fixtures. The priority, however, remains securing passage to the next round of the Conference League.

The decision to arrange a friendly for Rugani underscores the importance of squad depth and the need to manage player fitness effectively. With a busy schedule ahead, ensuring all players are match-ready will be crucial for Fiorentina’s success on both fronts.

Gudmundsson’s potential return is a significant positive for Fiorentina. The forward has been a key player for the club, and his presence will add another dimension to the attack. Vanoli’s cautious optimism suggests he will be eased back into action, with a substitute appearance the most likely scenario against Jagiellonia.

The upcoming match against Udinese is also on the horizon, and Vanoli’s plan for Rugani demonstrates a long-term approach to player development and preparation. By utilizing the Primavera squad, the coaching staff is providing valuable game time for players who may not be getting regular minutes in the first team.

Fiorentina currently compete in Serie A, where they have a long history of participation, being one of only four clubs to have played in the most Serie A seasons. The club has won two Italian league titles (1955-56 and 1968-69), six Coppa Italia trophies, and one Supercoppa Italiana. They also have European pedigree, having won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1960-61, and have reached several other European finals, most recently losing in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 UEFA Conference League finals.

The club, refounded in 2002 following bankruptcy, plays its home matches at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, which has a capacity of 43,147. Giuseppe B. Commisso is the current president, and Paolo Vanoli is the head coach.
