Christmas Eve Box Office Results

Christmas Eve, as always, except for years with a highly anticipated “FOMO” (Fear Of Missing Out) movie like Spider-Man: No Way Home, saw a dip in attendance. Estimated total earnings for all movies were $27.6M. This figure includes $2M in preview revenue from A24’s Timothée Chalamet period drama, Marty Supreme,which outperformed Chalamet’s Christmas Eve previews for A Complete Unknown last year ($1.4M, leading to a 5-day total of $23.2M). Sony’s jack Black and paul Rudd comedy, Anaconda, also generated $2.1M in previews.

Focus Features notably did not report preview numbers for their Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson musical, Song Sung Blue – a decision that is, frankly, disappointing. Previews for Anaconda and Marty Supreme began at 12 noon. The initial six-theater run in new York City and Los Angeles for Marty Supreme earned an estimated $88K yesterday, bringing its running total to $1.2M.

Comparison to Recent years

Yesterday’s overall box office business was down -31% from Tuesday’s nearly $40M haul. The strongest Christmas Eve post-COVID was in 2021, when Spider-Man: No Way Home captivated audiences and drove a $31.1M day. This year’s christmas Eve performance was +24% compared to 2022, when Avatar: Way of Water was in release.
