A Resurgent Threat: the Chaves Wildfire
A wildfire that originated in Galicia, Spain, has experienced a significant resurgence in the Chaves municipality of Portugal, prompting a large-scale emergency response. The fire, which first crossed the border on Tuesday, August 19th, at 10:35 local time, reignited with intensity this afternoon near the Outeiro Seco Business Park, posing a direct threat to nearby companies.
Three Fronts, Intensified Flames
According to the subregional command of Alto Tâmega, the fire is currently advancing on three distinct fronts: Vila Verde da raia, Bustelo, and Vila Meã. Bruno Sarmento, the second subregional commander of Alto Tâmega and Barroso, emphasized that the immediate priority is the safety of residents and their properties. The flames are described as burning with significant intensity across these areas.
The challenging terrain and strong winds are significantly hindering firefighting efforts. These conditions are contributing to the rapid spread of the blaze and making containment increasingly difficult.
Businesses and Residents in the Path
The fire’s rapid progression has directly impacted local businesses. emanuel Teixeira, owner of a food and beverage distribution company in Outeiro Seco, described a harrowing experience. “The firefighters entered, managed to wage behind the warehouse, but burned all this side, burned everything down,” Teixeira told Lusa agency. “The way the reactivation began and how the wind began to blow, we already knew that he would stop here, but we never thought he came so hard and so fast.”
Teixeira expressed particular concern about the fire’s potential to spread towards the Tâmega River and the neighboring community of Vila Verde da Raia. The presence of straw bales, used as animal feed in the Dry Outeiro area, further exacerbates the risk of rapid fire spread.
Emergency Response and Resource Allocation
As of 5:20 PM local time on August 20, 2025, a total of 413 personnel were actively engaged in combating the wildfire, according to the National emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANPC). This includes 133 ground teams and three aerial resources. The deployment of these resources underscores the severity of the situation and the commitment to containing the blaze.
The fire initially entered Portugal on Monday in the Vilar de Perdizes zone, Montalegre municipality, before spreading to Chaves and impacting several villages including Aldela, Tower, Couto, Vilela Seca, Outeiro Seco, and the Chaves Business Zone.
