Delray Beach, FL – A terrifying collision between a Delray Beach Fire Rescue truck and a Brightline train Saturday morning left 15 people injured, shaking the community and raising concerns about railroad safety. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. near the intersection of SE 1st Street, prompting a massive emergency response.

Alek Dunn, a Delray Beach resident who lives across the street, described the harrowing moment: “I was on a call with a friend, and the next thing you know, I heard the crash. I saw the train deploy its emergency brakes and slow down.”

Video footage released by Brightline, captured from onboard the train, shows the moments leading up to the collision. The gates are clearly down as the train approaches the intersection.

“Railroad safety is a community-wide effort,” brightline stated on their X account, alongside the video. “For everyone’s safety, never drive around crossing gates when they are down.”

Three firefighters were hospitalized, two with trauma alerts, and are currently in stable condition at Delray Beach Medical Center.Twelve Brightline passengers sustained minor injuries and were also transported to the hospital.

“I mean to make it out of that with seeing the damage—it’s intense,” said victoria Var-Heibak, a visitor to downtown Delray Beach.

Local resident Kevin keller echoed the sentiment, questioning how a fire truck could be on the tracks: “I don’t know how a vehicle was on the train tracks and especially a fire truck.”

Delray Beach Fire Chief Ronald Martin confirmed that the cause of the crash is under examination by multiple agencies,including the Delray Beach Police Department,Brightline officials,and the National Transportation safety Board.

While details remain unclear, Chief Martin noted that there was a call to service in the area shortly before the incident, but couldn’t confirm if the truck was assigned or released from that call at the time of the crash.

The Brightline train has as been removed, and E Atlantic Avenue has reopened. though, SE 1st Street remains closed as the investigation continues.This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of railroad safety and the potential consequences of disregarding safety measures.
