A mysterious fireball blazed across the daytime sky Thursday, triggering more than 200 reports from bewildered residents in at least six southern states. The meteor event, witnessed around 12:30 p.m.,sparked widespread speculation about its origin.
The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City,Ga., reported that most sightings came from Georgia and South Carolina. The object was described as a streak of light and a fireball. Authorities believe the meteor was either space junk or a meteor.
The American Meteor Society said it received at least 215 reports from people expressing amazement. A woman in Bethlehem, Ga., described the fireball as “bright” with “a bright tail that disappeared with it, and left behind a smoke trail. I’ve never seen anything like it before.” A man in Milledgeville, Ga., reported, “I believe it hit the ground.”
Georgia Home Damaged
Adding to the mystery, a Henry County, Ga., resident reported a rock crashing through their roof around the time of the sonic boom. The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City said the object left a golf ball-sized hole in the ceiling and cracked a laminate floor. “We are presuming that a piece of the object fell through their roof,” the weather service stated.
Dashboard and doorbell cameras captured the fireball plummeting through clear skies. While meteors and space debris frequently enter Earth’s atmosphere,a daylight sighting of this magnitude is rare.
A Cumming, Ga., man told the meteor society, “First time to ever see an event in daylight like this.” A Dublin, Ga., woman reported it was “so bright in the middle of the day… brighter than the sun.”
NASA says bright fireballs result from friction as an object enters the atmosphere and slows. Most objects break into tiny pieces before hitting the ground.
