Firestoke, the Edinburgh-based indie game publisher behind titles like Morbidly Ever After and Death’s Door, is ceasing operations after four years. The news was shared by founder and CEO Paul Farley on LinkedIn, citing a challenging fundraising habitat and the lack of a breakout hit as key factors in the company’s closure.
Funding Challenges and the Search for a ‘Hit Game’
Despite progress towards profitability, Firestoke ultimately ran out of capital. Farley explained in his LinkedIn post that the current fundraising landscape proved insurmountable. “The harsh reality is that we ran out of runway and found the current fundraising environment a hurdle we couldn’t overcome. In lieu of a hit game sadly there wasn’t any way to continue the journey,” he stated.
The competitive nature of the gaming market demanded a significant success to propel Firestoke to the next level, a feat the company wasn’t able to achieve. While Firestoke secured promising games aligning wiht its vision of “joyful and innovative fun,” these titles didn’t generate the widespread recognition needed for sustained growth.
A Positive Outlook Despite Closure
Despite the disappointing outcome, farley expressed pride in the team and the games Firestoke published. He highlighted the company’s strong internal processes, data-driven decision-making, and the quality of the games they chose to support.
“there are no regrets,” Farley wrote. “We signed great games that met our criteria for joyful and innovative fun. The creative and data driven insights we leaned into supported these choices and we built a capable small team with excellent internal processes.”
He emphasized a commitment to openness, honesty, and fairness throughout the closure process. Farley also indicated a desire to find new homes for the games in Firestoke’s portfolio and the development studios that created them, noting that discussions are “progressing well” with potential partners.
Future of the Firestoke Brand
While the immediate future involves winding down operations, Farley left the door open for a potential revival of the Firestoke brand. he will be focusing on securing the best possible outcome for the company’s assets and partners.
“The outcome wasn’t what I had hoped for, but I’m glad to have had the opportunity. it’s been a fun ride while it lasted. Thanks to you all,” Farley concluded. “What’s next? The immediate focus is upon securing a new home for our portfolio and the development studios behind those games. This is progressing well and hopefully there will be news to share very soon.”
