Breaking Barriers: A Conversation with “Strictly” Champion Chris McCausland
You made history last night by becoming the first blind contestant to win “Strictly Come Dancing.” How does it feel?
Chris McCausland: Honestly, I’m still a bit speechless. I never expected to get this far, let alone win the whole thing. It feels amazing to have achieved something that’s never been done before.
What was the journey like? What were your biggest challenges and triumphs?
CM: It was a wild ride, that’s for sure! learning the routines was definitely challenging, but Dianne was an amazing teacher and partner. She always found creative ways to explain the steps and help me feel comfortable. The biggest triumph, aside from the win, was simply proving to myself that I could do it.
Your speeches throughout the competition were incredibly inspiring. You talked a lot about the importance of chance and support. Can you elaborate on that?
CM: I was 22 when I lost my sight completely. It was a tough time, and I had moments where I doubted myself and what I could achieve. But I was lucky to have a strong support system around me.My family, friends, and now Dianne have shown me that with the right attitude and support, anything is possible.
How do you hope your victory will Inspire others?
CM: I hope it shows people that they can achieve their dreams, no matter what obstacles they face. We all have our own challenges, but we shouldn’t let them define us. If a blind guy can win “Strictly Come Dancing,” then anything is possible.
What’s next for chris McCausland?
CM: I’m not sure yet! I’m definitely going to enjoy this moment and celebrate with Dianne. But I’m excited to see what opportunities come my way. This experience
has opened my eyes to new possibilities, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.
