The Asia Pacific Dental Federation (APDF) has released the first-ever dentist-authored daily self-oral care guide, emphasizing that oral diseases—including periodontitis, gingivitis, and dental caries—are largely preventable yet remain a significant public health burden across the region. The comprehensive white paper, titled The Power of Prevention: Evidence-Based Guidelines for Self-Oral Care, was developed by regional dental experts in collaboration with LISTERINE® manufacturer Kenvue and published on May 25, 2026.
The report underscores that oral diseases, which can impact systemic health—including cardiovascular and respiratory systems—are often inadequately managed in Asia-Pacific despite their preventable nature. Alreen Reyes, president of the APDF, stated in the white paper that “oral health is foundational to overall health,” adding that while oral diseases are largely preventable, they continue to place growing strain on individuals and healthcare systems in the region. The guidelines aim to promote evidence-based daily oral care practices to reduce the prevalence of preventable conditions.
The white paper highlights that periodontitis, gingivitis, and dental caries remain among the most common untreated health issues in Asia-Pacific, with their complications extending beyond oral health to affect broader well-being. The APDF’s initiative is framed as a call to action for both public health systems and individuals to prioritize prevention through accessible, scientifically grounded oral care routines.
LISTERINE®, a brand of Kenvue, supported the development of the guidelines, reinforcing the importance of integrating oral health into broader public health strategies. The white paper is positioned as a foundational resource for dentists, policymakers, and the general public, offering actionable steps to mitigate oral disease risks through consistent, evidence-based self-care.

In a statement accompanying the release, the APDF noted that the guidelines are designed to be adaptable to diverse cultural and socioeconomic contexts, ensuring that prevention remains accessible to all populations in the region. The publication follows growing recognition of oral health as a critical component of overall wellness, with the APDF emphasizing that early intervention and sustained care are key to reducing the long-term health and economic impact of oral diseases.
The white paper is available for download through the APDF’s official channels, with additional resources planned for dissemination through dental associations, public health campaigns, and community outreach programs.
