Drivers heading toward Prague on the D1 highway are now utilizing the newly reconstructed half of the historic Šmejkalka bridge, following a major traffic shift managed by the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD). According to transport authorities, the opening marks a significant milestone in a massive 965 million koruna modernization project designed to overhaul the oldest crossing on the country’s central motorway network.

The first phase of the construction effort wrapped up after a year and a quarter, during which crews dismantled the deteriorating inbound structure. According to ŘSD spokesperson Jan Rýdl, workers removed the old load-bearing elements alongside concrete blocks weighing up to 50 tons each. Contractors also demolished the original piers, crushing the extracted concrete on-site so it could be partially reused as backfill and aggregate directly within the ongoing works.

With the Prague-bound half now structurally complete, the bridge features a fresh železobetonová reinforced concrete deck, modern waterproofing membranes, advanced drainage systems, durable safety barriers, and a smooth asphalt surface. According to ŘSD officials cited by ČTK, traffic will temporarily remain organized in two narrowed lanes in each direction until late September. Once crews finish installing the central median barriers later this month, heavy machinery will transition across the motorway to begin work on the outbound span heading toward Brno.

Engineering History and the Path Forward

Spanning the Hrusický potok valley between Senohraby and Turkovice at a height of 46 meters, the Šmejkalka bridge holds status as the oldest structure along the entire D1 route. Construction began in 1939 under complex geopolitical conditions and stretched across a decade, interrupted heavily by the disruptions of the Second World War. The right arch beneath the Brno-bound lanes was successfully cast in concrete in 1941, while the left arch followed five years later. Following post-war completion, subsequent modifications took place between 1973 and 1977 before the crossing finally opened to regular traffic alongside the broader D1 corridor linking Prague and Brno.

The structure previously underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 1991, but the current modernization led by the Strabag and Pragoprojekt consortium stands as the most extensive intervention in its history. Work commenced in July 2023 with an estimated price tag of 965 million koruna excluding value-added tax. According to project updates provided by ŘSD representative Luděk Hubáček, the entire reconstruction remains on schedule to wrap up by the summer of next year.

When contractors shift operations to the Brno-bound half in late September, their primary technical challenge will involve deep structural repairs to the original masonry elements. As Rýdl explained, workers will first strip away the remaining aged superstructure before executing a comprehensive structural rehabilitation of the historic stone arch, which engineers intend to preserve and reinforce as the foundational anchor of the modern bridge.
