Belgrade, Serbia – A 30-year-old man from the kosovo region has become Serbia’s second confirmed case of mpox, marking the first instance of the virus in this area. The Regional Institute of Public Health announced the confirmation on Friday.
The patient, who recently returned from West Africa, was hospitalized on December 24th after presenting with symptoms including fever, chills, and skin lesions on his face and hands. He is currently in stable condition.
Serbian health authorities are actively tracing all close contacts of the patient and have issued infection control recommendations to prevent further spread of the virus.
this latest case comes as the World Health Institution (WHO) continues to classify the mpox outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern. While the european Center for Disease Prevention and control (ECDC) predicted an increase in imported mpox cases in Europe during August, thay maintain that the likelihood of sustained transmission within the continent remains low.
Recent reports from the ECDC highlight a small cluster of four mpox cases in Germany on December 15th. Belgium also reported its first confirmed case linked to the Ib clade of the mpox virus on December 18th, involving an individual who had recently traveled to an African country affected by the ongoing outbreak.
