‘Fantastic Four’ ⁤Star Gets Rock-Solid Support From… a Rock

Marvel Studios ‍is known for its innovative approaches to ⁢character portrayal. for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the production team took an unusual route to bring Ben grimm, a.k.a. the thing, to life. While Sean Gunn has famously stood in for Rocket Raccoon, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays ⁣the Thing, had a different kind of co-star: a rock.

The rock, affectionately named “Jennifer,” played a crucial role. Director Matt shakman explained that⁣ they searched the desert⁣ for a rock resembling their vision of the Thing. “We filmed it in every single ‌shot that the Thing appears in in ⁤the movie, under every lighting surroundings,” Shakman said.

This practical stand-in provided CG animators with essential ⁣references for coloring and lighting, ensuring the final version of the⁤ Thing wasn’t overly⁣ cartoonish. The use of Jennifer helped ground Moss-Bachrach’s motion-capture performance in reality.

Moss-Bachrach expressed confidence in ⁤the animation team. “It’s a little bit heady to think about all the hundreds of people that are helping animate this character,” he said.‌ “I just⁤ had faith that they would make my ​performance so much cooler. I’m very,very happy with the way ​Ben looks.”
