FirstBuild has unveiled the Sourdough Sidekick, a countertop appliance designed to automatically feed and maintain sourdough starter without requiring manual intervention or discard.
The device, developed in partnership with King Arthur Baking Company, allows users to set a desired amount of starter and a timeframe—up to seven days in advance—after which the appliance manages feeding schedules autonomously.
According to FirstBuild, the Sourdough Sidekick eliminates the need for regular feeding and the associated waste from discarding excess starter, aiming to reduce the maintenance burden for home bakers.
The appliance is intended for use with a dedicated, easy-to-clean glass crock provided by King Arthur Baking Company, which is included with the unit.
FirstBuild, operating as GE Appliances’ innovation hub, positioned the Sourdough Sidekick as a solution to common challenges in sourdough baking, particularly the time and attention required to keep a starter viable.
The product was introduced to the public through a launch on Indiegogo, where it is available for pre-order, following a period of community co-development involving baking enthusiasts.
FirstBuild emphasized that the Sourdough Sidekick was created through direct collaboration with King Arthur Baking Company, combining appliance innovation with expert knowledge in fermentation and bread baking.
As of the announcement date, the device remains in the pre-release phase, with availability contingent on the outcome of the crowdfunding campaign.
