argentine rock icon Fito Páez recently reflected on his free concert in Mexico City’s Zócalo and his new album, Novel. The Zócalo shows are a cultural staple in Mexico City, offering free performances by major artists to the public. Páez’s performance, initially delayed, drew a massive crowd eager to hear his iconic songs.
Páez described the Zócalo concert as special, emphasizing the exchange between countries and the unifying power of music. He noted how such events exist outside the mainstream music industry, fostering genuine connection.
Novel,Páez’s new album,is a concept album that blends rock with theatrical elements. He began working on demos for the album in 1988, seeking a lighter sound after his darker album, Poor Hearts City.The album draws inspiration from The Who’s quadrophenia, aiming for an immersive experience with visuals and lyrics.
“It is special, especially getting to a city where a historic revolution was planned, and seeing that vrey place celebrating you—well, the art, not specifically me,” Páez said from his apartment in Buenos Aires. “What you see at work, there is a true exchange between countries, between music, words, and their value.”
Novel explores themes of love, societal expectations, and individuality. One standout track, “Superextraño,” pays homage to rock legends like Charly Garcia, John Lennon, and spinetta. The album’s cover art evokes surrealist artists like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo, complementing the album’s fantastical narrative.
Beyond Novel, Páez is also focused on literary endeavors. He is currently writing his first poetry collection and an essay titled “Music in the Times of Mass Dementia,” which examines the evolution of music.He shared excerpts of the essay with students at Berklee College of Music.
Páez emphasizes the importance of love in his work, viewing it as a broad theme encompassing various human experiences. He believes love connects people irrespective of their circumstances.
“There is nothing more notable than love,” he said. “Love in all its forms is the only theme that interests me as it is indeed so broad.”

Fito Páez is scheduled to perform in Spain this July, showcasing his new album Novel. he will also continue to work on his literary projects, with plans to release his poetry collection and essay in the near future.
