Wilderness Festival: More Than Just Music,It’s an Experience
Table of Contents
the Wilderness Festival isn’t simply another name on the packed UK festival calendar; it’s a carefully curated escape. Returning in 2026, this immersive event blends music, arts, wellbeing, and culinary delights into a uniquely refined experience. While the music lineup is consistently strong – this year featuring Orbital, Wet leg, Supergrass and The Bootleg Beatles – it’s the holistic nature of Wilderness that truly sets it apart.
Beyond the Bands: A Feast for the Senses
It’s easy to get lost in the buzz surrounding major music festivals, but wilderness deliberately offers something different. Yes, the music is good – very good – but it’s presented as part of a larger, more enriching experience. this year saw the introduction of a new blackbox indie stage, responding directly to feedback from festival-goers,demonstrating a commitment to evolving wiht its audience.
However, even the festival’s organiser, Philip Bett, concedes that music isn’t necessarily the primary draw. “I think that’s fair,” he admits. And it’s easy to see why. Wilderness excels in creating moments of unexpected joy and luxury. Imagine indulging in a beautifully crafted dinner within the Audi stage, a culinary vision brought to life by Monica Galleti. Or, as happened to one journalist, having renowned chef Angela Hartnett pause to ask how you enjoyed her food. These aren’t typical festival encounters; they’re the hallmarks of a festival that prioritises connection and indulgence.
The emphasis on wellbeing is also significant. From restorative yoga sessions in woodland clearings to invigorating dips in natural swimming ponds, wilderness actively encourages attendees to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with themselves. This focus on holistic experience is a key differentiator in a crowded market.
The festival industry has faced significant headwinds in recent years, with the combined pressures of Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis forcing many events to close their doors. However, Bett remains optimistic about the future. He believes that “festival culture is totally ingrained in the psyche of this country,” and that a resurgence is unavoidable.
He acknowledges that competition from large stadium and arena gigs – particularly the highly anticipated, but ultimately disruptive, Oasis reunion shows - has impacted ticket sales this year. “There have been some extraordinary stadium and arena acts coming through which have been a little bit of a distraction, I guess, from festival culture,” he explains. But he welcomes the challenge. “For a show that’s been going 14 years, it’s realy important that it feels fresh every year.”
Wilderness’s commitment to innovation and its willingness to adapt to changing tastes are crucial to its continued success. By offering an experience that goes beyond simply booking popular acts, it has carved out a unique niche in the festival landscape.
looking Ahead to 2026
