VILLIERS-EN-LIEU, France (AP) — Eighty primary school students in Villiers-en-Lieu received a‍ specially designed flag bearing the city’s coat⁤ of ‍arms⁣ on April 29, courtesy of the association ⁣Le Souvenir Français.

Representatives from‍ Le Souvenir ‍Français, including departmental delegate Roland Belbezier and local Saint-Dizier president Maxime Belgrand, presented the flag to the students.

This marks⁤ the first ⁣flag of its kind designed specifically for children in the Haute-Marne department.

A Flag Designed ⁣for Young Hands

Villiers-en-Lieu Mayor Eric Bonnemains explained the flag’s unique design. “The flag was designed⁤ on purpose for them, so it is⁢ smaller than a classic flag,” Bonnemains said. He‍ noted⁢ the handle and ramp are smaller, and the flag itself is lighter⁣ for ease ‍of use by children.

Le Souvenir Français contacted the city late last year to initiate the ⁤project. “We thought it was an ‍prospect to have something more official for our ceremonies and to interest ‍children to come and continue to come on ‍ceremonies,” Bonnemains added.

The flag will be prominently displayed in the school after renovations are complete,⁤ serving ⁣as a focal point for student activities.”We realy try to involve them as⁢ much as possible in ceremonies so that thay are⁣ not ⁢simple spectators, ‍but that they understand,” Bonnemains emphasized.

Commemorative ⁣Debut

The flag will make its debut on may 8, ⁣during the commemoration of ⁣the end of⁤ World War II. It will be carried by a student from the CM2 ⁢class participating in the civics passport program.

“This flag is a very good opportunity to ‍complete our action of the civics ⁤passport, and to maintain the interest that we are trying to put in place, towards the youngest, for tribute ceremonies to the dead,” said Delphine rizzato, the civics passport⁢ coordinator for the village.

This is‍ the second year for the civics passport program,which aims to involve ‍CM2 students more actively in commemorations,including participation in the Marseillaise and speeches.

The April 29 presentation concluded with the⁣ signing of ⁣an agreement between‍ the town hall, the school, and Le Souvenir Français.
