gaudreau Honored with Emotional Tribute in return to Calgary
Calgary, Alberta – In a touching pre-game ceremony, the Calgary Flames paid tribute to former star forward Johnny gaudreau, who returned to the saddledome for the first time since signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets in the offseason.
The ceremony began with both teams lining up at their respective blue lines as a video montage highlighting Gaudreau’s memorable moments in Calgary played on the jumbotron, set to a rendition of ”Johnny B. goode” by Flames anthem singer George Canyon.
Adding to the emotional weight of the evening, Gaudreau’s family took center ice for a ceremonial face-off. His parents, Guy and Jane, wife Meredith, and two children, along with sisters kristen and Katie, were met with thunderous applause from the crowd. Flames forward Mikael Backlund and Blue jackets forward Sean Monahan, a close friend of Gaudreau’s, lined up for the draw, with both teams surrounding the family in a show of solidarity.
“It speaks to our leadership group,[Monahan] obviously being on top of that,” said Columbus coach Dean Evason. “Just conducting himself in a professional manner and not shying away from showing his emotion and using it to move us forward. To see the family here and the outpouring of love and support of this institution, this city and this country, Canada, has been fantastic.”
Monahan, who spent nine seasons in Calgary, including eight alongside Gaudreau, signed a five-year contract with the blue Jackets on July 1, hoping to reunite with his former teammate. The season has been a difficult one for Monahan, who has been playing with a heavy heart following Gaudreau’s departure.
“That meant a lot. I think a lot about him,” Backlund said of Monahan.”For him to move to columbus to be reunited with Johnny, they were so excited to get to play with each other. for [Monahan] to have to go through that every day, it’s just heartbreaking and I think a lot about him. It was great to share that moment with him and show the support and love for the family.”
