Flash flood warnings and severe thunderstorms struck the New York City area on Aug. 27, 2026, bringing heavy downpours, gusty winds, and localized hail to the tri-state region, according to PIX11. A slow-moving storm system drove the severe weather threat through the afternoon and into the evening hours.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for parts of the city and surrounding suburbs during the day, with conditions remaining hazardous into the evening. According to PIX11, the official flood threat continued through 11 p.m., while a severe thunderstorm watch remained active through 8 p.m.

Earlier in the afternoon, storms produced gusty winds that brought down tree limbs in Staten Island, according to PIX11 reporting. Outlets also recorded dime-sized hail in Browntown, New Jersey, as the front pushed across the metropolitan area.

Weather Outlook and Expected Conditions

The threat of severe storms and heavy downpours wound down during the late evening hours on Aug. 27, 2026, leaving behind scattered showers for the remainder of the night, according to PIX11. Overnight temperatures dropped to around 70 degrees.

Conditions are expected to improve on Aug. 28, 2026, with the return of sunshine. However, PIX11 notes that a passing cold front could trigger an isolated thunderstorm as it moves across the region. Temperatures will top out in the lower 80s with lingering humidity.

Clearer and less humid weather is forecast to arrive by Aug. 29, 2026, bringing sunny skies and lower humidity with temperatures in the lower 80s, according to PIX11. Muggier conditions will return by Aug. 30, 2026, alongside partly sunny skies and afternoon highs in the mid-80s without any anticipated rainfall.
