‘Stereophonic’ Play Explores Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’ Era

The new play “Stereophonic” at the Duke of York’s theater is generating buzz for its close parallels to Fleetwood Mac’s tumultuous “rumours” period. Even though playwright David Adjmi denies direct inspiration,the play features a band grappling with drug use and strained relationships,set in a Sausalito studio similar to where “Rumours” was recorded. The production earned 13 Tony Award nominations.
Director Daniel Aukin creates a hypnotic, naturalistic atmosphere within David Zinn’s set. The talented cast, including Jack riddiford as the rage-prone guitarist Peter and lucy Karczewski as his stoic girlfriend Diana, bring depth to their roles. Zachary Hart portrays the drug-addled bassist Reg,while Nia towle plays his exasperated wife,Holly.Eli gelb provides comic relief as the beleaguered techy Grover, and Andrew R. butler embodies Charlie, a sound engineer.
