Customcells Files for Insolvency in Key Production Units
ITZEHOE, Germany – Customcells, a battery manufacturer specializing in high-performance, customized battery cells, has filed for insolvency for its production divisions in Itzehoe and Tübingen.
Financial Difficulties Stem from Customer Insolvency
The company announced that the financial difficulties “essentially result from the insolvency and default of its largest customer,the aerospace company,Lilium.”
According to Customcells, this resulted in unpaid invoices in the double-digit millions, which could no longer be collected.

Wages Secured until June 2025
the company stated that “despite promising business development, it was not possible to attract new investors with sufficient capital in time to compensate for these losses.”
Customcells aims to maintain and continue business operations as effectively as possible. Employees’ wages and salaries are secured until June 2025.

Customcells was founded in 2012 as a spin-off of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. It has locations in Itzehoe (Schleswig-Holstein) and Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg), employing more than 200 people.
