Flood Alert: Mekong River Swells to Brink, Cruise Ships Halted as Levee Overflow Looms
Nakhon Phanom’s Mekong Water Level Stabilizes at 11.70 Meters
Nakhon Phanom’s Mekong water level has stabilized at 11.70 meters, just 30 centimeters from the alarm monitoring point of 12 meters. Despite the turbulent flow and floating debris, the authorities have confirmed that the water does not overflow and does not flood the city.
Temporary Halt on Tourist Cruise Ships
The authorities have temporarily stopped the management of tourist cruise ships to prevent dangers to navigation. The Municipality has confirmed that the water level is not expected to overflow and flood the city.
Small Passenger Ships Continue to Operate
Small passenger ships crossing between Thailand and Laos, Khammouane province, continue to operate, serving people who come to do their usual shopping. However, strict safety measures are in place, and everyone must wear a life jacket.
Nakhon Phanom Municipality Prepares for Heavy Rain
Nakhon Phanom Municipality has confirmed that even though the water level of the Mekong is high, there is no possibility of it flooding the city due to the construction of a dam to protect the high bank. However, the municipality is prepared to monitor the situation 24 hours a day to deal with heavy rain.

Director of Navigation Comments on the Situation
Mr. Narongchai Thaosi, Director of Navigation of Nakhon Phanom Municipality, stated that the water situation in the Mekong must be assessed every day due to the high level of the Mekong River flowing turbulently. He also mentioned that the service will be temporarily stopped for safety reasons.
Expected Resumption of Tourist Cruise Ships
It is expected that in about 4-5 days, if the water level of the Mekong does not rise, the tourist cruise ships will be able to provide normal service. The authorities are confident that the city will not overflow, even if the water level reaches 12 meters.
