Sukabumi, Indonesia – Torrential rains that lashed Sukabumi, West Java, for two consecutive days have triggered widespread flooding, landslides, and bridge collapses, leaving a trail of destruction across the region.
As of Wednesday, December 4, 2024, floodwaters in some areas have reached a staggering two meters in height, according to Pelabuhan Ratu Police Chief commissioner Roni Haryanto. The deluge is attributed to the overflowing of the Cisawo and Cigangsa rivers.
“We are coordinating with the Sukabumi Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and other relevant agencies to provide assistance to affected residents,” haryanto said.
Authorities have evacuated 50 residents to emergency shelters established in various flood-stricken locations.
The impact of the relentless downpour extends beyond Pelabuhan Ratu. In Ciemas, four villages – Mekarsakti, Mandrajaya, Tamanjaya, and Ciwaru – are submerged under two meters of water, forcing residents to seek higher ground.
“The water level in several areas has reached up to two meters, necessitating the evacuation of some residents to safer locations,” stated AKP Deni Miharja, police Chief of Ciemas.
The flooding has also affected the districts of Cidolog, Gegerbitung, Tegalbuleud, and Pabuaran.Adding to the region’s woes, Sukabumi BPBD Head deden Sumpena reported landslides and soil movement in at least 18 other areas.Among the hardest-hit villages are Sangrawayang (Simpenan), Sirnaresmi (Cisolok), babakan Panjang (Nagrak), Cibaregbeg (Sagaranten), Loji (Simpenan), Palabuhanratu (Palabuhanratu), Hegarmamah (Warungkiara), and lengkong (Lengkong).

The relentless rainfall began on Tuesday afternoon and continued through Wednesday morning, overwhelming the region’s drainage systems and triggering the cascade of disasters.
“We are actively evacuating residents from affected areas.The Sukabumi BPBD is currently conducting assessments and compiling a complete damage report,” Sumpena said.
