Paolo Maldini and his assistant Leonardo are reported to have stepped down from their positions within Italian football following a political dispute over the blocked appointment of Andrea Pirlo as the next national team manager, according to reporting by Yahoo Sports.

The turmoil began when Pirlo emerged as a leading candidate to take over the Italy job after former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reportedly declined the opportunity, as detailed by Yahoo Sports. Maldini, who had recently assumed the role of Italian Football Federation technical director, strongly backed his former AC Milan and Juventus teammate for the post. However, Pirlo’s potential appointment was abruptly blocked after several Italian politicians raised concerns regarding a sponsorship deal between Pirlo and the Russian betting company Fonbet.

Political Objections Derail Pirlo’s National Team Bid

According to Yahoo Sports, critics argued that Pirlo’s role as an ambassador for the Russian betting firm conflicted with Italy’s diplomatic and political support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war. Adverts, endorsements, and sponsorship deals pertaining to betting are strictly prohibited in Italy. Pirlo was prepared to leave his current managerial position at Dubai United before the federation pulled the plug on his hiring.

In a public statement released on Monday via Instagram and cited by Yahoo Sports, Pirlo expressed bitterness over the public debate surrounding his candidacy.

Over the past few days, watching the discussions spring up around my identity and the prospect of becoming the manager of the Italian national side has filled me with deep sorrow. Keeping quiet until now was a decision I made out of sheer deference to the Federation, the institutions, and everybody involved.

Pirlo defended the commercial agreement, clarifying that his association with Fonbet was tied entirely to his club career in the United Arab Emirates and was exclusively of a commercial and sporting nature. That characterization faced a counter-claim from Dubai United owner Sergey Lomakin, who stated to Yahoo Sports that Pirlo’s involvement with the firm was not an involuntary aspect of his contract.

To read political motives into this partnership is to assign views to me that I have never held and do not belong to me. I would like to thank Maldini and Leonardo for the esteem and trust they have shown me. I know their expertise, their seriousness, and the love they have always dedicated to Italian football.

Maldini and Leonardo Step Down After Sixteen Days

The collapse of Pirlo’s candidacy prompted an immediate and severe internal reaction. Yahoo Sports reported that Maldini was furious with the decision made by FIGC president Giovanni Malago to block the appointment. Consequently, Maldini and his assistant Leonardo chose to step down from their posts after serving just 16 days in the federation.

Florenzi Praises Maldini as Italian Football Faces Leadership Chaos

Reflecting on Maldini’s brief tenure and overall stature in the sport, defender Alessandro Florenzi praised the Milan legend’s potential impact, telling Yahoo Sports that Maldini could have revolutionised Italian football.

The Search for Italy’s Next Manager Continues

According to Yahoo Sports, Pirlo had been considered at best a third-choice candidate after top targets Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola turned down overtures from the federation. Italy’s leadership must now address a vacant technical director office and a stalled managerial search for a squad that has failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups.

With Pirlo officially removed from consideration, Yahoo Sports reports that former Italy managers Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte have re-entered discussions as potential candidates to take over the struggling Azzurri setup.
