Largo Woman Wins Fight Against Mobile Home Eviction
Kerrie Bacci, a resident of Shangri La Mobile Home Park in Largo, Florida, successfully contested an eviction notice from Equity LifeStyle Properties, a Chicago-based company that owns numerous mobile home parks. Bacci’s victory, aided by attorney Michael Hildebrandt, underscores the importance of understanding tenant rights in eviction cases and the potential to fight back against large property management firms.
Bacci believes the eviction attempt stemmed from her complaints about the unmaintained dumpster area near her property. She said she had to clean the area herself several times a week. After she erected a sign near the dumpsters without approval, the property manager issued violation notices for the sign,an intercom speaker, and planters extending onto the sidewalk.
The situation escalated when a property manager arrived at Bacci’s home and began measuring her lot without prior notice, prompting a confrontation captured on video. According to the Florida Residential Landlord-Tenant Act, landlords typically must provide 24 hours’ notice before entering a rental property.
“Moast people in these parks don’t have the means or capabilities of defending these evictions properly, so they wind up giving up their homes,” Michael Hildebrandt, Attorney said.
What’s next
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is reviewing Bacci’s complaint against equity LifeStyle Properties. Hildebrandt said he has been contacted by other Equity LifeStyle Properties tenants.
