Florida Gators Upset Ole Miss: A Turning Point Under Billy Napier
Billy Napier and the Gators’ Big Win Against Ole Miss
Billy Napier woke up last Saturday after 1,084 days as Florida’s head football coach. Since his introduction in December 2021, his teams faced challenges. However, on Saturday, they achieved a significant victory by defeating No. 9 Ole Miss 24-17. This win marked Florida’s first back-to-back victories over ranked teams since 2018 and secured a bowl game spot.
Napier expressed optimism, stating, “We’re just getting started.” The Gators’ win against Ole Miss was especially meaningful since it came against coach Lane Kiffin, who had been rumored as a potential replacement for Napier earlier in the season.
The game featured standout performances, particularly from running back Montrell Johnson Jr. Johnson scored the crucial go-ahead touchdown after returning from injury. He had previously played under Napier at Louisiana and chose to follow him to Florida. Johnson’s journey was inspired by his mother, Keyshawn Harris, who has supported him throughout his life.
With the game tied and Florida in possession, Napier instructed his running backs coach to give the ball to Johnson. Following a significant pass from freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, Johnson scored the final touchdown, pushing Florida ahead. The Gators’ defense closed out the game, recording two interceptions in the last minutes.
Johnson’s performance was impressive, with 107 rushing yards on 18 carries. He aimed to complete his senior season strong after facing injuries. His mother highlighted the importance of their bond, as she has been his guiding light since the loss of his father at a young age.
Teammates praised Johnson, recognizing his leadership and impact on the team. “Montrell is a special kid to me,” Napier said. He emphasized Johnson’s character and influence on younger players, showcasing the ethos of the team.
Florida’s win over Ole Miss signified a turning point in Napier’s tenure, illustrating the program’s resilience and the Gators’ passion for football.
