Florida State Employees Get Extra Holiday cheer with Five-Day Weekend
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is spreading holiday cheer too state employees with teh gift of extra time off. desantis announced three additional paid holidays for state workers, extending the Christmas and New Year’s break to a five-day weekend.
“In addition to Christmas Day and New Year’s day, our state workers will have three additional days off (december 23rd, 24th, and 31st) to spend more time with their families and loved ones this holiday season,” DeSantis announced on X, formerly known as Twitter.
State offices will be closed during these five days, allowing employees to fully enjoy the festive period.
“Florida is in great shape, and we want to reward our state workers,” DeSantis said in a press release. “After a full year,including three costly hurricanes,we hope these extra days off will allow state workers to spend more time with their families and loved ones during this holiday season.”
The governor highlighted the tireless efforts of state employees, especially their response to Hurricane Idalia and the state’s Operation Rescue Israel initiative.
“These additional days are a well-deserved opportunity for them to spend time with their families and loved ones while enjoying the holiday season,” DeSantis added.
The benefit extends to over 100,000 state employees. Dan Barrow, spokesperson for the Department of Administrative Services, clarified that essential workers unable to take time off during the holidays can reschedule their leave within the next seven months.
This isn’t the first time the DeSantis governance has granted extra holidays. In the past, state employees have enjoyed extended weekends around Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July, and the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
Florida state employees are entitled to nine paid holidays annually: new Year’s Day,Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Tallahassee, FL – Florida state employees will enjoy an extended holiday season in 2024, thanks to three additional days off granted by governor Ron DeSantis.The extra holidays, falling on December 23rd, 24th, and 31st, will give state workers more time to celebrate with loved ones during the Christmas and New Year’s period. These days supplement the existing holidays of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

The move will benefit over 100,000 state employees across various departments. Recognizing that some essential workers may not be able to take time off during the holidays, the state has ensured they can schedule their additional days within a seven-month window.
This decision comes after a particularly demanding year for Florida’s public servants. In addition to the ongoing demands of their roles, they played a crucial part in the state’s response to Hurricanes Idalia, Nicole, and Ian.
