Florida Gators Football Player Arrested on Dating Violence Charge
A University of Florida freshman football player was arrested on a felony charge of false imprisonment related to dating violence, according to a Gainesville Police report. The incident allegedly occurred on June 1.
The 17-year-old, whose name is being withheld, is expected to be charged as a juvenile in Alachua County Civil Court. The third-degree felony carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to the police report, a verbal argument escalated into a physical confrontation after the alleged attacker discovered information on the victim’s cellphone. The victim stated she attempted to leave the room but was blocked. The accused then allegedly grabbed the phone and threw it against the wall.
The victim further alleges that she was pushed onto a bed, shaken, restrained, choked, and punched in the face multiple times.The accused reportedly outweighs the victim by more than 200 pounds.
The report states that after the alleged attack, the victim asked, “are you satisfied?” and the accused responded “yes.”
The accused denied choking the victim or preventing her from leaving, but admitted to throwing the cellphone. Officers observed fresh wounds on the victim’s face and noted dents on the bedroom wall consistent with the victim’s phone.
This incident marks the second recent arrest of a Florida football player. Last month, cornerback Dijon Johnson was arrested in Tampa on multiple gun and drug charges, including two felonies.These incidents raise concerns about player conduct and team discipline within the Florida Gators football program.
