AI-Generated ‘Self Portrait,’ Explores Identity in the Digital age
A new video artwork, titled ‘Self Portrait,’ is currently on display at the Design London Shoreditch exhibition, prompting a re-evaluation of the traditional self-portrait thru the lens of generative artificial intelligence.
A Dialog wiht AI
The artwork’s creation began with a unique interaction: the artist initiated a conversation with Google’s Gemini, prompting it to describe itself. This dialogue served as the foundational visual framework for the entire project, exploring the very nature of AI consciousness and depiction.
Blending Human and machine Aesthetics
To establish a distinct visual style, a series of AI models were meticulously fine-tuned using the artist’s own photographic work, in collaboration with Google DeepMind Research Scientist Jason Baldrige. This process leveraged Google’s Imagen image generation model, imbuing the AI-created images with qualities reminiscent of the artist’s photographic aesthetic – intentionally blurring the boundaries between human creator and technological tool.
From Still Images to Looping Video
hundreds of these generated images were then refined and sculpted into a final, seamless looping video using Flow. The artist likened this stage of the process to the traditional techniques employed in a photographic darkroom, highlighting the continued relevance of artistic craft even within a cutting-edge digital workflow.
Reimagining the Self-Portrait
‘Self Portrait’ delves into the age-old question of self-representation, reimagining the concept for the 21st century. The artwork explores complex themes including identity, the impact of technology, the human drive for expression, and the evolving relationship between humanity and the landscapes we inhabit.
