The initiative addresses gaps left by a federal vaccine-process breakdown, providing evidence-based guidance on influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus vaccines.
Independent Review Fills Federal Guidance Gaps
The Vaccine Integrity Project launched as an interim stopgap measure to evaluate vaccine effectiveness and safety after shifts in federal review processes. Michael Osterholm, PhD, MPH, CIDRAP director and coauthor of an accompanying commentary, noted that the project will not replace the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices but ensures continued access to comprehensive safety reviews. Bruce Gellin, MD, MPH, chair of the VIP Board of Advisors, emphasized during a press briefing that the independent review aims to counter conflicting messages and restore trust in evidence-based guidance. Four major medical organizations—the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America—contributed their recommendations during the briefing to support the upcoming respiratory season.
Physician Guidance on Influenza Vaccination Timing and Safety
To combat persistent misinformation surrounding the flu shot, family physicians Carlos Galindo, MD, of Texas Health Family Care and Christopher Zipp, DO, of Atlantic Health outlined essential clinical facts for patients. Dr. Galindo explains that influenza is a highly contagious virus affecting the nose, throat, and lungs, with cases appearing year-round although the typical flu season is October to May. Dr. Zipp notes that vaccinations continue effectively through March and early April. Clinicians stress that injected influenza vaccines cannot cause the flu, as they contain no live virus. Mild post-vaccination symptoms typically reflect a normal immune response rather than an infection.
Disease Burden and Prevention Metrics from the CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention documented significant public health impacts from influenza, recording at least 32 million illnesses, 390,000 hospitalizations, and 24,000 deaths nationwide during the 2025-2026 flu season. Conversely, vaccination efforts demonstrate substantial protective benefits. CDC estimates indicate that flu shots prevented approximately 10 million illnesses, 5 million medical visits, 185,000 hospitalizations, and 12,000 deaths during the 2024–2025 season. Medical authorities recommend that everyone aged six months and older receive an annual vaccination, noting that flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines can be administered during a single healthcare visit.
