Filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg has confirmed that his upcoming directorial feature, The Debut, will launch at an autumn film festival this year, according to an interview with Screen at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Production Background and Festival Strategy

According to Screen, Eisenberg shot The Debut right after the 2025 Academy Awards, where he earned a nomination for best original screenplay for A Real Pain. The filmmaker spent six months on a press tour prior to production, which made his third feature feel notably different. The Debut feels looser, fun and experimental, because I felt a little more comfortable in my own skin, Eisenberg told Screen. While Eisenberg declined to name the specific autumn event due to studio constraints—joking to Screen that A24 will sue me—he praised the trajectory of the film. Thinking about how to release it, it has the ethos of a 1990s throwback independent movie, Eisenberg told Screen. Not just because our stars are Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, but because we shot on film, it takes place in 1990, and because of my interests. And yet it plays more commercially than we expected.

Cast Dynamics and Future Projects

The Debut stars Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti. According to Screen, the narrative follows an unassuming housewife who is unexpectedly cast in a community theatre production, ultimately losing herself in the role under the guidance of a strong-willed director. Eisenberg stated that he wrote the script specifically for Moore. Beyond his third feature, Eisenberg discussed several upcoming professional endeavors with Screen. He opted not to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming film The Social Reckoning, a standalone sequel to David Fincher’s 2010 film The Social Network, to avoid permanent association with the Facebook founder. However, Eisenberg is collaborating with The Social Reckoning producer Peter Rice on a separate television series for A24, adapting short stories Eisenberg wrote five years ago. Additionally, Eisenberg reported that he has another feature script in development and anticipates reuniting with Woody Harrelson for a fourth installment of the Now You See Me franchise.
