Fusion Startup Focused Energy Powers Up with $40 Million Laser Purchase
San Francisco, CA – Focused Energy, a leading fusion power startup, has announced a major step forward in its quest to bring clean energy to the world. The company has secured two of the world’s most powerful lasers, a move that will significantly accelerate its research and development efforts.
“These are some of the highest-average-power lasers in private company hands,” said Scott Mercer, CEO of Focused Energy. The lasers, capable of delivering over a kilojoule of energy to a target, represent a nearly $40 million investment.
Focused Energy is pursuing inertial confinement fusion, a technique that uses powerful lasers to compress a fuel pellet, triggering a fusion reaction and releasing energy. This approach was first proven to achieve net-positive fusion power at the U.S. government’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) just over two years ago.
While NIF can perform around 300 fusion “shots” per year, Focused Energy aims for a much higher rate – 10 shots per second – for a commercially viable power plant. The new lasers will initially fire about onc per minute, but this is partly due to ongoing development of supporting equipment.
“All of these sub-systems are technology demonstrators for the ultimate fusion pilot plant that we want to build,” explained Doug Hammond, Focused Energy’s VP of laser engineering.
The bespoke lasers,manufactured by French specialist Amplitude Laser,are massive,each occupying about 1,600 square feet – the size of a small house.
“One of the reasons why we are not making such big lasers in series is because nobody wants them in series,” said Damien Buet, CEO of Amplitude Laser.
Though, if Focused Energy achieves its enterprising goals, that coudl change. The company’s designs for a commercial power plant require thousands of lasers per facility.
“The number of diodes needed for one facility woudl more than max out the current diode capacity worldwide,” Buet noted. “We would need to ramp up an entire supply chain.”
This massive scale is necessary to provide enough energy for ignition and ensure the reliability of the power plant.
Focused Energy’s biggest challenge now is speed. “we set our target for 2035,” Mercer said. “It’s mostly conditioned on,how quickly can we start to move towards laser manufacturing at scale?”
He acknowledged the ambitious timeline,comparing it to the complexities of bringing a traditional power plant online within a decade.
