Foden’s Band has secured its 14th title at the 172nd British Open Brass Band Championship, according to reporting by the BBC. Held at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, the victory reinforces the Sandbach, Cheshire-based ensemble’s standing as a leading competitor in the international brass band community.

A Legacy of Success in Cheshire

Formed in 1902, the 124-year-old band has maintained a prominent position in global rankings throughout its history, with plans already underway to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2027, as reported by the BBC. The latest triumph at the British Open adds to an extensive collection of honors for the Cheshire group, which includes 16 National Championships of Great Britain titles and seven Brass in Concert victories, according to BBC reporting.

Mark Wilkinson, the manager and principal cornet player for Foden’s Band, described the group’s reaction to the result to the BBC by stating, We’re over the moon; the band played fantastic. Wilkinson also received the award for best cornet player during the contest, though he noted to the broadcaster that he still experiences significant nerves due to the weight of the organization’s history. We’re the custodians, Wilkinson told the BBC, so we want to do a fantastic job just like the players before us so we can pass on this legacy to the next generation.

Behind the Birmingham Competition

The contest featured 19 competing bands, testing performers at the highest level of brass musicianship. Conductor Russell Gray emphasized the intense preparation required to secure the top spot, telling BBC Radio Stoke that success does not happen by itself.

The dedication these musicians put into the craft is phenomenal, Gray told BBC Radio Stoke, as reported by the BBC. I’m always in awe that they actually hold down day jobs as well and then come into the band room in the evening to play so magnificently.

While acknowledging the immense pressure involved in maintaining elite performance standards, Gray maintained that playing in the ensemble remains a hobby. He added in the BBC report, You choose to do a hobby; you don’t choose to do it badly, do you? You don’t go fishing to not catch a fish.

By winning the British Open Championship, Foden’s Band earned an invitation to represent England at the European Championships scheduled for 2028, according to the BBC. The upcoming international appearance extends a busy multi-year schedule for the organization as it approaches its milestone anniversary in 2027.
