The Science Behind Airport Fog and its Impact
Fog forms when water vapor condenses into tiny water droplets suspended in the air. this typically happens when the air cools and becomes saturated with moisture. Several factors contribute to fog formation at Ireland West Airport Knock:
Geographical Location: The airport’s inland location, surrounded by low-lying areas, creates a natural trap for moist air.
Temperature Inversion: A temperature inversion occurs when a layer of warm air sits above a layer of cool air. This prevents the cool air near the ground from rising and dispersing the moisture, leading to fog formation.
Prevailing Winds: Winds blowing from the Atlantic Ocean can carry moisture inland, contributing to the saturation of the air.
The impact of fog on airport operations is significant. Reduced visibility makes it difficult for pilots to land safely, leading to delays and diversions. Airports employ various technologies to mitigate the effects of fog, including:
Instrument Landing Systems (ILS): ILS provides pilots with precise guidance during landing, even in low visibility conditions.
Runway Lighting: Enhanced runway lighting improves visibility for pilots.
Fog Dispersion Systems: some airports use fog dispersion systems to clear the runway surface. However, these systems are expensive and not widely used.
Ireland west Airport Knock: Adapting to Changing Weather patterns
