The documentary FOLKTALES, a cinematic exploration of growth and connection, emerged from an unexpected discovery. Co-director Heidi Ewing, initially focused on dogsledding, found herself captivated by the concept of a “folk high school” after learning her co-director, Braverman, had attended one. this intrigue led Ewing to research the enduring presence of these unique educational institutions. Her findings revealed a robust network of over 400 folk schools across Scandinavia, prompting a deeper dive. After visiting five such schools, Ewing and her co-director Grady decided to center their documentary on one, drawn to its profound impact on young lives.
The Heart of FOLKTALES: Coming of Age in the Arctic
At its core, FOLKTALES is a powerful narrative of resilience, personal growth, and the forging of deep connections. “We were interested in coming of age, how to become brave, what dose it take to step into adulthood with grace and dignity and without fear,” Ewing shared following the documentary’s premiere at the Library Center Theater in Park City. This sentiment was echoed by Grady, who added,”At its heart,it’s a story about the cycle of life. Things come and go, but there is always something that stays consistent, which is: We all grow older.” The film delves into the universal experience of transitioning into adulthood, emphasizing the courage and self-discovery required to navigate this pivotal life stage.
Norse Mythology as a Guiding Framework
Drawing profound inspiration from Norse mythology, Ewing and Grady artfully frame the students’ experiences through the ancient lens of Odin’s observation of the Norns. These three wise women, akin to the Fates of Greek and Roman mythology, are depicted as spinning the threads of destiny. This mythological parallel imbues the film with a sense of timelessness and purpose, suggesting that the students’ journeys are part of a larger, unfolding narrative. The documentary masterfully weaves together the lives of these young individuals as they confront the multifaceted challenges and embrace the rich rewards of Arctic life.
The students’ experiences are vividly portrayed as they engage in demanding yet transformative activities. Caring for a pack of loyal Siberian huskies, animals believed to unlock a person’s true self, becomes a central element of their growth. Through the arduous task of tending to these powerful creatures, the teens learn about obligation, empathy, and the profound bond between humans and animals. Furthermore, they endure the unforgiving Arctic cold, a physical challenge that mirrors their internal struggles. In confronting these external hardships, the teenagers are compelled to confront their fears and insecurities head-on, emerging stronger and more self-aware.

For Hege Birch Wik, one of the students featured in FOLKTALES, the folk high school represented a vital escape and a sanctuary. Following the tragic loss of her father, she sought solace in the vast wilderness, attempting to grapple with the pressures of youth and the relentless scrutiny of social media. At the premiere,Wik candidly shared her initial reactions to Ewing and Grady’s filmmaking techniques.”At first it was really weird. I’m not used to two ladies running after me,” she recounted, eliciting laughter from the audience. She continued, “But after a while they are like yoru friends, so you want to be around them. Also they never pushed me if I didn’t want to talk about something. They could also read if it was too early to talk about something. In the first interview we just talked briefly and the more we got to know each other, the more comfortable we felt and then we could talk more about the deep stuff. They were very great.” This testament highlights the filmmakers’ sensitive and empathetic approach, fostering an surroundings of trust that allowed for genuine emotional expression.
