Folktales Film Screening | Billings Farm & Museum, Woodstock VT
“Folktales” Documentary to Screen at Billings Farm & Museum
Woodstock, VT – Billings Farm & Museum will host screenings of the documentary “Folktales” on Saturday, and Sunday, at 3 p.m. The film, part of the 16th annual Woodstock Vermont Film Series curated by Vermont filmmaker Jay Craven, offers a glimpse into a unique educational experience in Arctic Norway.
“Folktales” follows a group of teenagers as they spend a “gap year” at Pasvik Folk High School in Finnmark, Norway. Rather than traditional classroom settings, the students engage in immersive experiences, including dog sledding and wilderness navigation, guided by a pack of Siberian huskies. The film explores how these challenges foster self-discovery and a sense of purpose in young adults on the cusp of adulthood.
The documentary, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, draws inspiration from Norse mythology, specifically the Norns – deities believed to weave the threads of fate and shape human futures. Pasvik Folk High School aims to provide similarly transformative experiences for its students, encouraging them to navigate their own destinies.
According to a review, “Folktales” lends “a universal resonance to the coming-of-age story, just as good folk tales do.” The film captures the intimacy of the students’ journeys and the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic landscape through compelling storytelling and cinematography.
Tickets for the screenings are $15 per person and $12 for Billings Farm members. The screenings will take place in the Billings Farm & Museum Visitor Center Theater, located at 69 Old River Rd, Woodstock, VT 05091.
Billings Farm & Museum is regarded as one of the finest outdoor history museums in Vermont, situated a short walk from the village center. The Woodstock Vermont Film Series, which features “Folktales,” aims to transport viewers through curated cinematic experiences inspired by the surrounding countryside.
The screenings of “Folktales” are among a series of events at Billings Farm & Museum. Other events scheduled around the same time include “Our Working Lands: Photography by Caleb Kenna,” which will be on display February 28th and March 1st.
