Fonseca: Referee Disrespected Milan
Milan Coach Cries Foul After Controversial Loss to Atalanta
Milan, Italy – Tensions flared after Atalanta edged out AC Milan 2-1 in a thrilling Serie A clash on Friday night. Milan coach Paolo Fonseca accused referee Federico La Pena of showing “a lack of respect” towards his team, sparking controversy over key decisions.
The match, which saw Atalanta climb to the top of the Serie A table with 34 points, was marred by controversy surrounding Atalanta’s opening goal. Former Milan player Charles De Catellier headed home the opener, but Milan players protested, claiming De Catellier had pushed Theo Hernandez in the process.
“I’m not afraid to tell the truth,” Fonseca told Sky Sport Italia. “I’ve always respected the job of the referees, and I know they do a tough job, but it’s always the same thing every week. The way the referee handled this evening lacked respect for Milan.”
Fonseca insisted the first goal was a “clear mistake” and that the referee’s overall management of the match was biased against his team.
While acknowledging his team’s defensive lapses on set pieces, which led to Atalanta’s second goal, Fonseca maintained that Milan deserved more from the game.
“At the end of the day, we lost the match because of two set pieces,” he said. “The first half was very good, but the attackers were not in touch in the second half. I think we deserved more tonight. It was hard to concede two goals from two set pieces.”
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who watched the match from the stands due to a suspension, celebrated his team’s victory, emphasizing their hard-fought win against a strong Milan side.
“Obviously, it’s a great win against a team that includes some very talented players who are undoubtedly among the best in the league,” Gasperini said. “We deserved this win.”
Despite the jubilant chants from Atalanta fans about a potential Serie A title, Gasperini urged caution, reminding everyone that the season is far from over.
“Citizens of Bergamo think realistically; So don’t take anything for granted,” he said. “If we’re still leading after 20 more games, it will be different, but in the current situation it’s an expression of joy, and they’re right.”
The controversial loss leaves Milan in seventh place with 22 points, while Atalanta sits atop the table, two points ahead of Napoli.
