Food for Shock: Mysterious Molar Discovery in Popular Supermarket’s Traditional Chinese Treat
Human Tooth Found in Mooncake Purchased at Chinese Supermarket
Purchased at ‘Kim’s Club’ in Changzhou, China, the company claims to inspect with X-rays.
A human tooth was found in a mooncake purchased at a Chinese supermarket, causing shock.
According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post and Chinese media outlet Guangming, a Chinese woman bought a 29.9 yuan (about 5,600 won) meat moon cake in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province on the 5th and discovered human teeth inside it.
The woman reported the incident to the police, saying, “This does not belong to anyone in my family.” She also posted a related video on social media.
Consumers who purchased the moon cake left more than 100,000 reviews, with many complaining of stomachaches and saying the meat in the moon cake was not fresh.
The supermarket in question is an American supermarket chain, and a Changzhou Sam’s Club employee said the company is investigating the incident.
The manufacturer of the moon cake explained that it is impossible for teeth to be mixed in with the meat, as it is inspected with an X-ray machine before being minced and shipped.
This is not the first time that something like this has happened at a Sam’s Club store in China. In 2022, a woman in Fujian Province, China, bought Swiss rolls at Sam’s Club, and her uncle reportedly found three artificial teeth in the bread he ate.
In the same year, a Sam’s Club in Nanjing was fined 30,000 yuan for selling moldy strawberries, and a Shunyi store in Beijing was fined 65,000 yuan for selling expired powdered milk.
Sam’s Club is a membership warehouse club affiliated with Walmart, operating in China, Mexico, Brazil, and the United States. It entered China in 1996 and has 49 branches in major cities.
Sam’s Club has faced several incidents in China, raising concerns about food safety and quality control.
