Football News: Racism Claims, Suspensions & On-Field Action

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

The fallout from alleged racist abuse continues to reverberate through European football, with Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni receiving a provisional one-match suspension from UEFA following accusations made by Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. During their Champions League clash last week. The incident, which occurred during the first leg of the round of 16 tie in Lisbon, led to a 10-minute stoppage as Vinicius alerted the referee, François Letexier, to the alleged abuse.

Prestianni has denied the allegations, and Benfica has announced its intention to appeal the suspension, though the club acknowledges the appeal is unlikely to impact his availability for Wednesday’s second leg in Madrid. UEFA has initiated a full investigation, with an ethics and disciplinary inspector assigned to the case, potentially leading to further sanctions.

The accusations leveled against Prestianni are the latest in a disturbing pattern of racist incidents plaguing European football. Just this season, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Schalke’s Christopher Antwi-Adjei were both reportedly subjected to racial abuse early in their respective league campaigns. In Spain, police arrested a spectator for allegedly directing monkey gestures and noises toward Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé in August. Italy has also seen incidents, with Juventus’ Weston McKennie targeted with racist abuse.

The surge in reported incidents has raised alarm among anti-discrimination groups. Piara Powar, executive director of the Fare network, stated that the number of reported cases is “more than double what we had last season at the same time.” Powar also highlighted the increasing prevalence of abuse on social media, referencing incidents involving England player Jess Carter during the Women’s European Championship.

The incident involving Vinicius Jr. Is particularly sensitive given his repeated experiences with racism in Spanish football. According to reports, Kylian Mbappé claimed Prestianni called Vinicius a “monkey” five times during the match. Mbappé also expressed his belief that Prestianni should not be allowed to play in the Champions League. The situation has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for tougher penalties against offenders.

The response to the incident has not been without controversy. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho, who is suspended for the second leg due to a separate sending-off, faced criticism for his post-match comments, where he suggested Vinicius’ celebration in front of Benfica supporters was disrespectful. Mourinho will not be available for pre-match media duties, with assistant coach Joao Tralhao taking his place.

The broader context reveals a growing frustration among players regarding the lack of meaningful progress in combating racism. Semenyo expressed bewilderment at the continued occurrence of abuse, questioning why it persists “in this day and age.” Players are increasingly demanding more robust action from both the justice system and football governing bodies.

The situation has also extended beyond the pitch. Wesley Sneijder, a Dutch football analyst, received thousands of death threats after making comments about the incident, highlighting the intensity of emotions surrounding the issue. This underscores the volatile atmosphere and the challenges in fostering constructive dialogue.

The Prestianni suspension, while provisional, represents a rare instance of swift action by UEFA. However, the effectiveness of such measures remains to be seen. The ongoing investigation will be crucial in determining the full extent of the alleged abuse and whether further punishment is warranted. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of racism in football and the urgent need for comprehensive and effective solutions.

The incident also comes amid a wider conversation about player conduct and respect on the field. While the focus remains on addressing racism, the debate surrounding celebrations and perceived disrespect, as highlighted by Mourinho’s comments, adds another layer of complexity to the situation. The challenge for football authorities is to strike a balance between protecting players from abuse and maintaining standards of sportsmanship.

As the second leg between Real Madrid and Benfica approaches, the shadow of this incident looms large. The match will undoubtedly be played under heightened scrutiny, with both clubs and UEFA under pressure to demonstrate their commitment to combating racism. The outcome of the investigation and the subsequent actions taken will have significant implications for the future of the sport and the fight against discrimination.
