For the first time in its history, Brazilian Botafogo won the Libertadores Cup
Botafogo faced Atletico Mineiro at Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires. Botafogo’s Gregor received a red card just two minutes into the match for a violent tackle on Faustao Vera. Despite this setback, Botafogo dominated the first half. Luiz Henrique scored the first goal in the 35th minute. Alex Telles added a second goal from a penalty kick in the 44th minute, giving Botafogo a 2-0 lead.
Atletico Mineiro fought back early in the second half. Eduardo Vargas, a veteran striker from Chile, scored in the 47th minute, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Despite attempts from Hulk and Vargas to equalize, they could not score.
In stoppage time, Junior Santos sealed the victory for Botafogo with a goal in the 97th minute. This goal clinched the title for Botafogo and prevented Atletico Mineiro from winning for the second time, with their first win occurring in 2013.
Botafogo won the title in the 65th edition of the tournament. They became the 12th Brazilian team to achieve this prestigious cup victory.
